Australian Magpie

Gymnorphina tibicen

Magpies live in groups and live on insects and their larvae, also other invertebrates and small reptiles.

They are very vigorous in defence of its nest, it will harass and attack even humans who inadvertently stray too close. The bird often sings in company, mainly at dawn and dusk, and sometimes at night; generally its song is one of the most characteristic features of the Australian bush.

This is of a young bird who shows no fear when I walk up quite close to where its feeding.

Afraid they are far too bullying to other birds here.
They even steal the fur from the tails of squirrels.

They look quite different to our ones, who are very brilliantly black and white with no grey area! They are true pests, and rob all the small birds' food. They are great breeders, and are not regarded with great affection. I have yet to post a decent picture of one. Another personal challenge for me: deal with something you don't like!!

We have been feeding our families too, hoping they would leave the nests of small birds alone...I love them when they don't raid.
