Sendai 仙台

Tōhoku's largest city and the capital of Miyagi Prefecture, green, leafy Sendai is known across Japan as the "City of Trees". In many ways the nerve center of the region, Sendai was first established as a castle town and capital by daimyō Date Masamune in 1600. Its vast castle complex, Aoba-jō, was destroyed in firebombing during World War II, but remnants of it have been restored, along with the elaborate Azuchi-Momoyama style mausoleums of Masamune and his sons at Zuihō-den.
