A trio of cities along the main Tōhoku train line in Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures, Shiroishi, Nihonmatsu and Shirakawa are all former castle towns that sat towards the southern end of old Mutsu Province. Although none of them have retained their original central castle keeps, each have since restored many of their old structures, with the exception of the upper fortress at Nihonmatsu-jō (which remains a dramatically situated ruin).
