Tsuruoka 鶴岡

The second largest city of rural and mountainous Yamagata Prefecture, Tsuruoka is a historic town close to the Sea of Japan coast. Formerly a castle town, the city is most frequently visited today as an access point for the sacred mountains of Dewa Sanzan. Some of its Edo and post-Meiji Restoration heritage has been preserved in its old center.
