Kinosaki and Fukuchiyama 城崎と福知山

One of the most celebrated, historic onsen (hot spring) resorts in the Kansai region, Kinosaki sits at the northern edge of Hyōgo Prefecture, just inland from the Sea of Japan. Famous for its winter crab, the small resort retains a very traditional atmosphere, with geta and yukata-clad visitors slowly strolling from bathhouse to bathhouse along its willow-lined canal.

A former castle town and the fifth-largest city in Kyōto Prefecture, Fukuchiyama sits in the mountainous upper interior of the Kansai Region close to Hyōgo-ken. Mostly a sleepy provincial city, it is most notable for its tastefully reconstructed castle.
