Gelsenkirchen - ZOOM Erlebniswelt

The ZOOM Erlebniswelt is a zoo in my home town, based on the old Ruhr-Zoo, which was originally built in 1949.
The old Ruhr-Zoo was the zoo of my childhood days and my favourite place to experience with my first simple camera.
Haven´t been there for almost forty years.

Between 2004 and 2010 they changed the old zoo into the ZOOM Erlebniswelt, which is divided in three parts, representing Asia, Africa and Alaska.
It´s a great adventure park now, with spectacular artificial landscape, lakes and some additional details, like an african village for example.
When I visited the new zoo now, nearly nothing reminded me of the old one.

In 2008/2009 the ZOOM Erlebniswelt was regarded to be the best zoo in Germany.
Well, to be sure about that, I think, they should have asked the animals too. Sometimes I´m not sure about my opinion towards zoos.
Man is responsible for the species extinction, and at the same time we are proud to give animals a place to survive within zoos.
I must admit, I always enjoy my visits there. But a prison remains a prison, even if it is a luxury one.

An interesting and varied gallery. I must say I share your opinions regarding Zoos. There is something contradictory about saving animals and holding them captive. And like you say, a prison, is a prison. But then the the whole relationship of humans is crazy when you consider that we think some are cut, some make good pets, others are good to eat or wear, and still others are pests. "V"

I agree with your words Werner, but your gallery is fantastic, and I would not have the chance to see it if it weren't for that nice Zoo. Love each and every photo!! V

Yes, Werner, I understand exactly what you are saying and like you, have mixed feelings. When the zoos aim to breed rare species or protect endangered ones, that is good, but as you say, a prison remains a prison. Nonetheless, I compliment you on your excellent images and your fine words. V
