essen - zeche zollverein

The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen. In 2001 it has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites and it is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

The first coal mine of the complex was founded in 1847. Throughout the years the whole complex became bigger and bigger, and many of the new constructions and buildings were considered architectural and technical masterpieces of its time. Zollverein Coal Mine also ranked among the largest of its kind in Europe for many years, concerning the production, until it was closed down in 1993.

Today 'Zollverein' is a centre for cultural events and creative firms, mainly for design and architecture.
