Rotterdam is a striking anomaly among Dutch cities, defined more by its futuristic vision than by traditional canal-side charm. In May 1940, the heart of Rotterdam was nearly leveled by a Luftwaffe bombing raid that destroyed over 25,000 buildings. Rather than attempting to replicate its medieval past, the city chose a path of radical modernization. While small pockets like Delfshaven survived to offer a glimpse of pre-war life with its 17th-century houses and windmills, the majority of the city was treated as a "tabula rasa" for experimental design. Today, Rotterdam is widely considered Europe’s premier showcase for bold, modern architecture. Its skyline is a dense collection of glass and steel that has earned it the nickname "Manhattan on the Maas."
