“The Destroyed City” sculpture by Ossip Zadkine commemorates the German bombing of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940, which destroyed the medieval center of the city. The absence of a heart in this 6.5 m (21 ft) tall sculpture is said to symbolize the destruction of the center of Rotterdam.
