Piet Hein Monument in Delfshaven. Piet Hein (1577-1629) became a national hero in the Dutch Republic for his most celebrated achievement in 1628 when, as an admiral of the Dutch West India Company, he seized the Spanish silver fleet near Cuba without major bloodshed. The captured silver and goods were enormously valuable and helped finance the Dutch war effort during the Eighty Years' War against Spain.
