Secondary Road to Trout Creek and the Bay

Cold Bay, AK

The nearer one got to the town of Cold Bay, the more roads there were. We didn't travel rapidly on them because they were all narrow and winding, and surfaced with dirt or gravel. I later found out how traveling those roads at slow speeds affected my senses while moving much faster in a car on a paved highway. During December of 1970, I went home on leave to be with my family for Christmas. My wife picked me up at the airport in St. Louis, and drove us the 125 miles to our home town. It was the first time for six months that I had even seen a paved highway, let alone traveled at highway speeds. Wow! I was scared to death at how fast she was going!
