Orderly Room and Library
Cold Bay Air Force Station, AK
A partition separated the Library from the Orderly Room. While at Cold Bay, I checked-out and read several books. In addition to reading books from our library, some of the airmen took correspondence courses from colleges during their free time. It was a great way to occupy ourselves while away from the diversions of family and home. As for myself, I took a course from Saint Louis University. Lt. Col. Quirk was my superior Officer, so I asked him to proctor my final exam.
I really liked the way living in a remote area forced/allowed us to improvise in so many situations. Our library, in addition to being a source to so many reading materials, also served as our barber shop. Since we had no professional barbers, volunteers from the ranks cut our hair for a small fee. During the winter of ’70-’71 the library was one of the areas repainted.
