Painting the Library

Cold Bay Air Force Station, AK

The winter was dreary. Wind howled constantly. Because of the continuous blast and the wind chill, we did not spend much time out-of-doors. Sometimes I even envied those guys that slept in the trailers. At least they were forced to spend brief periods outside while walking between their quarters and the composite building. There they worked, ate, watched movies and visited the chapel or the club. It was the most depressing time of the year.
One morning I went to the C.O. with a suggestion. Why not get rid of the ugly, "puke" green walls in the hallways and other common areas? Life was depressing enough without making it worse with everything being painted the same color...especially a horrid shade of green! Besides, having a project for some of the guys, created especially to spruce up the area for their own enjoyment, might help with morale.
It wasn't long before we started painting. I had always loved to paint, so I tried my hand in the radar maintenance office (shown in another photo). "Twiggy" Kron did a lot of the painting, including the library/barber shop. Here, "Twiggy" took a break from painting to pose for the camera.
