"I lay awake in the darkness. My eyes were wide open with fear. I could not close them. I listened intently for the presence of the horrible monster that came in the night to devour me. I leaned my head to one side to see even the smallest movement in the pitch-blackness. No, the door had not moved. I was safe...at least for now. For weeks I was afraid to go to bed. My big brother had done this. The past several days he had been telling me about the monster that lived in our bedroom closet and came out at night to feed on little boys.
Fast forward twenty-some years. I lay in my sleeping bag on the side of Frosty...in almost total blackness...in the cold rain...in a bear trail. I listened for heavy breathing and the thudding sound of heavy footsteps. My body tensed as I waited to feel the ground shake from the pounding of enormous weight. My nostrils flared to catch even a hint of the stinking breath of the night monster. I could visualize it waving its head back-and-forth in annoyed disdain for this interloper in its path. While stationed at Cold Bay, I learned how to process black and white film. I developed my own negatives and made prints using an enlarger in the site's darkroom. In that manner I whiled away many hours of my non-working time.
