Shutterbugs on Frosty

Cold Bay, AK

We carried firearms almost everywhere as we explored. We also carried cameras. One never knew what would appear for a once-in-a-lifetime photograph. Steve Bishop(L) and Gene Smith took a picture of me photographing them. During my year at Cold Bay, I learned to develop black-and-white film, make enlargements and print images on paper. I also developed and mounted slide film so that it could be viewed in a small projector that I had brought with me. With respect to the B/W prints, once while I was in the darkroom, I discovered that we were out of any print paper... except coarse sheets that are mostly used to soften portraits. I thought, “what the heck?”, and used some of them just to see what would happen. How was I to know that this photo of Gene Smith and Steve Bishop on Frosty would be on-line 50 years later? A photo I took of Amak as seen from Frosty is also on the same paper. Since my other photos of a valley on Frosty and the creek running through it are also on that paper, I’ll bet they were taken on the same trip up the mountain.
