The Aswan High Dam, completed in 1971, backs up the Nile to form the 500-km long Lake Nasser, the world's largest reservoir. The monumental temples built by megalomaniac Pharaoh Ramses II at Abu Simbel, 280 km south of Aswan, were painstakingly taken apart and reerected on higher ground above the new lake. Downstream near Aswan, the Temple of Isis was similarly reerected.
