The westernised centre of the world's greatest Islamic city, laid out from 1860 onward in conscious imitation of the boulevards of Paris. Included also are scenes looking back from Gezira Island, across the Nile to the west. Fusty and grimy at first glance, downtown Cairo nonetheless preserves a wealth of Art Deco streetscapes - and surges with life after dark. The night-time throngs, that I first thought must be Eid el Adha holiday crowds, were simply everyday street life.
