Aswan, Egypt's southern city

Aswan, where the Egyptian desert closes in on the Nile, is the starting point for most Nile cruises. As far back as the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt, Aswan marked the border with Nubia, and the Nubian people are much in evidence today. Here the Aswan High Dam, completed in 1971, backs up the Nile to form the 500-km long Lake Nasser, the world's largest reservoir.
