Rufous-crowned Sparrow, juvenile

Ed Levin Park

The juvenal plumage of the Rufous-crowned Sparrow is cryptic, briefly held, and misdescribed in some leading field guides (there is no rufous in the crown.) There seem to be few photographs available, so I was happy to be able to post four, including this one. A good treatment of the plumage by Brad Schram is available online: http://www.westernfieldornithologists.org/docs/abstracts/40-4FP.pdf .
