GALVESTON - AFTER HURRICANE IKE

This gallery contains images of some of the damage after Ike. The devistation was surreal and the stench of death was everywhere. Garbage piled down every street in front of every home. Rocks that were jetties are now piled against the sea wall. Very little beach is left except for a couple of areas. No more souvenier shops on the beach are standing except for a couple that will fall eventually. Talked with a few families about their encounters with Ike and it was all so heartbreaking. The news doesn't show a lot of this and there are still 300 people missing and a few each day wash up on the beach. Hurricanes are dangerous and when you are on an island you need to get off of it. Those who did leave came back to their houses ruined but they still have their lives. A lot of those that didn't leave will never be able to tell their story because they are no longer with us. These images and those I will not post because they are too graphic will stick in my mind forever. Please say a prayer for all those who lost everything or someone they love and for strength to move on.

I was the Surgery Manager at the Sacramento Shriners' Hospital a few years ago. We were one of the pediatric burn centers and so was the Galveston Shrine Hospital. I saw one of the anesthesiologists at a get-together recently and he told me that the Galveston Hospital was badly damaged and won't be re-opened. That is another terrible outcome of this storm. The staff at that hospital were wonderful people who gave terrific, loving care to children. It's hard to measure the impact on them and the community. Thanks for sharing these photos.

Property loss is a terrible thing, everything you have worked for all your life is gone, but if you are smart, and listen to the authorities, and leave, you will still have life. You are told to leave because these storrm are capable of doing the destruction that you see here.

Great testimonial Cindi to the destructive forces of hurricane Ike, ue of b/w makes it more dramatic..

i don't live to far from there and the destruction is awful. but we will recover as time will tell. thank you for the pictures for the world to see. hurricanes can be awful. but some good comes too. drought was broken in some places in texas and the us. a silver lining? to some.

For those of us who live far away these images are a real eye opener, one hears so little of the aftermath , well documented Cindi. We should never forget that mother nature can be very destructive when she wants....

Nice documentary gallery...so sad to see such devastation that a hurricane leaves. Glad you made it out OK...so sorry for those who tried to stay and one who lost or had destruction to their homes.
