The Catherine Palace, St.Petersburg, Russia

The Catherine Palace, where Empress Catherine the Great lived and died. It was designed by Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli in impressive baroque style. Most of the restored interiors date back to 18th century. The Palace and the park are located in small town of Pushkin in 25 km east of St. Petersburg.

The Amber Room in the Catherine Palace is a complete chamber decoration of amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors. Due to its singular beauty, it was sometimes dubbed the "Eighth Wonder of the World". Destroied during the World War II, the room was reconstructed in 2003, which took six tonnes of true Baltic amber. (no pictures of this room, it is not allowed)

The Lyceum (Litzei) is just next door to the palace, a 19th century school for the elite, where the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin studied.
