Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, St.Petersburg
The Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood (Church of the Resurrection of Christ) stands on the exact spot where the Russian Emperor Alexander II was fatally injured on March 1, 1881. The construction and decoration of the church lasted a total of 24 years (1883-1907). Regular church services were performed untill 1930 when the church was closed. Today, the building is open as a State Museum, and represents a monument of both historic and artistic value.
There is not a single painting inside the Church on the Spilled Blood: its walls are almost entirely covered with mosaics. There are 308 mosaic illustrations covering the inner and outer walls, an area of 6,560 sq. metres.
Since 1970 complex technical works have been carried out to repair the building structure and to restore the unique decorative mosaics.
