Some 330 bays out of 350 bays in this 7,000 foot long structure are opened. The River at this point has reached its crest and should fluctuate within one or two tenths of a foot for the next two weeks, at least. The water travels 5.7 miles to Lake Pontchartrain going under three railroad trestles, one state highway and one interstate highway.
This scene was shot from the east side of the Spillway at Norco to the west side at Montz.
The Spillway structure is doing what it was designed to do, diverting the floodwaters of the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain and prevent flooding of the City of New Orleans.
