3rd January 2004

Fireplace from North Yorkshire

A few years ago we decided to change our fireplace.
I wanted to build something myself so we asked the farmer in Garsdale, where we used to rent a holiday cottage, to sell us some stone.
He had a collapsed barn 50 yards from the cottage and told us to help ouselves.
It was great fun choosing the stones one day during our holiday a few miles away.
We stacked it up near the road, and during the week after our return home, I hired a van.
Nell and I drove up and collected it all.
I hired a diamond disc cutter to reduce the depth of the chosen stones to the same size.
The mortar is the proper limestone mix to match the stone.
It was great fun doing the work and the stones mean something to us coming from where we had so many happy holidays when the children were young.

Adrienne and I are going to do something together this evening but I will catch up with you all as soon as I can.

Aw, what a lovely story! Sentimental value to me means so much more than monetary value, and this stone story is full of wonderful sentiment. A lovely homely photo, too. Well done!
