The next day we went to Fort Point, Greenwich Island. We went ashore to see the Chinstrap Penguins (and the ever-present Gentoos). We saw a glacier calving. Then later took a Zodiac cruise around the area and by the glacier that calved.
Next, we sailed to Barrientos Island. There were several Zodiacs ahead of us waiting to go ashore, so our Zodiac driver, Joe, decided to circle us around an interesting iceberg while we waited. We were about 30 feet away, circling around, when suddenly the iceberg calved. An upper shelf fell off, splashing us a bit and sending a small wave towards us. After an instant of stunned shock, Joe quickly steered us away and as he did, the rest of the iceberg just crumbled and collapsed in on itself. We were all a bit shocked. Even Expedition Team member Joe said it was "epic" and nothing he had ever seen before.
