Note that the LAYERS PALETTE now displays two layers: the BACKGROUND layer and the BACKGROUND COPY layer. Also note that the top layer, the BACKGROUND COPY layer, is highlighted in navy blue. This blue color indicates that this is the ACTIVE layer. This means that whatever we do in PhotoShop will be applied to this layer, leaving the layer beneath undisturbed. Now it is time to convert the top layer to Black & White. There are several ways to do this, but my favorite is to use the CHANNEL MIXER to make the B&W conversion. Proceed to the next slide.
