Sunrise at Meziadin Lake

This photo was taken in the early morning on the shores of Meziadin Lake on the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. Meziadin Lake is located at the turnoff to the small towns of Stewart and Hyder, AK.
I stayed for the night in an excellent campground on the shores of the lake. It turned out that if one wanted breakfast it was served very early in the morning, around sunrise. So on this particular day I had to get up much earlier than I normally did during the trip. It was however a spectacular sight to watch the first rays of light illuminate the mountains on the opposite side of the lake. And because I got up so early I also managed to cover a long distance during the day, which included a visit to both Stewart, Hyder and the Salmon Glacier.

The Stewart-Cassiar Highway, or simply Highway 37, is one of the most scenic routes of the North. It runs 718 kilometres (446 miles) from Alaska Highway near Watson Lake, through British Columbia to Kitwanga Junction on the Yellowhead Highway. The highway is much less travelled than the Alaska Highway, but it is rougher and narrow with gravel sections and steeper climbs, and is has far fewer facilities.

If you attempt to cover this highway on a bicycle then please note that as of 2011 there are still several unpaved sections of the road and it covers some very remote areas, with services far in-between at times. Bears are also frequently sighted along the road.
