In the 1980's, hundreds of German F-104 found a temporary parking spot at Manching-Ingolstadt 'en route' to Turkey and Greece for a second life. By 1987-1988, the number of retired German Starfighters decreased and the ones that were still stored at Manching never got a second life.
F-104G 22+06 (c/n 7076) made its first flight on 7 May 1963 and was retired on 20 January 1987 by Est61 (ErprobungsSTelle 61, or test unit) which also operated from Manching with a very diverse and interesting fleet of aircraft (including ex-Egyptian Su-20's a year before the picture was taken).
A rare base visit to the storage facility in February 1988 saw 22+06 and 19 other Starfighters retired and waiting for things to come. 22+06 now is preserved on a pole in Appen after restoration at Erding in 1997.
