Five species can be seen in the Park - but this is the first group where time of year and place are important. All very attractive with the typical roller flash of blue on the wings when flying.
The lilac-breasted is common and present all year and can be seen all over the Park - frequently perched on trees and poles next to roads. May seem less common when the European arrives in large numbers.
The purple roller is also present all year and can be seen throughout the Park. Less common than the lilac-breasted.
The European roller is a very common non-breeding summer visitor. They arrive in November and leave in March.
The broad-billed is also a summer visitor but breeds in the Park. Fairly common from October until April - though only from the Shingwedzi river northwards. Much less common further south.
There is a fifth roller, the racket-tailed. Uncommon and only found in the far north (Punda Maria and especially Pafuri). I have seen it once in 30 years!
