One of my favourite groups of birds. You can see 6 species in the Park all resident, varying in size from the red-billed to the huge Southern ground hornbill.
The red-billed and Southern yellow-billed are very common and can often me seen in the camps. The red-billed prefers drier over grazed areas. The grey hornbill is perhaps not so common but still fairly easy to find.
The crowned hornbill is much less common. Try around the Pafuri area, around the Mahonie loop (Punda Maria) and (much further south) Skukuza restcamp and along the Sabie river.
The trumpeter hornbill is a fantastic bird, with its haunting loud braying call. Loves fruit trees especially figs! Forested areas along major rivers are the places to look - especially the Luvuvhu and the Sabie.
The unmistakeable ground hornbill can be seen in small groups walking across the veld searching for food - basically anything that moves! They can fly and can be seen roosting in trees.
