[Bob Searl]My personal Wartime history taken from my snapshot album after the Normandy D-Day initial beach assault, to the end of hostilities. Each one has a precious memory for me and it is my wish to share these few historical photgraphs with you. My Unit, the 56th Signal Battalion, was directed to participate in the June 6, 1944 DDay amphibious operation NEPTUNE at Omaha Beach, Normandy with the assigned mission of providing communications for V Corps of the First United States Army prior to, during and after the Normandy amphibious phase of the June 6, 1944 operations as well as during the following campaign on the continent. The organization was divided into several detachments in order to provide communications for the various echelons as desired by the Commanding General. Detachments were organized on or about 21 April 1944 at Norton Manor Camp, near Taunton, England, as directed by the Battalion Commander and in accordance with plans developed with the different staff sections of V Corps Headquarters of the United States First Army under the direction of Lt. hello. Thank you for your site. My grandfather Robert Mather from Kentucky later moving to Las Vegas was in the Corps of Engineers during WWII. I believe he arrived through Normandy and traveled through Europe. I am fortunate that he is still here at 91 however he will not discuss the war (never would) and now can't' remember. My son is very interested in his journey for several reasons-his great grandfather and he loves history. I was wondering if there was a way for me to find out his unit and where he traveled. Bob, Thanks so much for your contribution to this country and the world. These picutres are awesome and very important. It's hard to read the conflicted views of people from Germany, and the like, but I am very clear about what this war was about. Although there is always money and a polical agenda involved, There was so much more at stake in WWII!! Since people from everywhere on this planet do whatever they can to move here to the USA ... we must have something of value that is important others around the world which inturn must have been important to fight for in WWII. It is so important to acknowledge the courage of everyone who fought and everyone who fought who died for our freedom. I for one am extremely proud and very grateful to you Bob, and everyone who serves in our military past & Present. Please know how much I really appreciate YOU!!! Hey Bob,thank you for letting me look at your album. My great uncle served with the Ack-Acks during the invasion of Normandy. I searched his house after his passing when I heard that his son abandoned it. Miraculously I found the letters that he had written to his wife while marching across Europe. Your Christmas card from 1944 was included in the cards, v-mail, letters and post cards. It was an awesome read for me. Your photos reminded me of my great uncle's experience. We are from Philadelphia as was Uncle Tom. Thanks again... Brian

My father served with the 552nd Engineering Battalion in WWII and helped build a lot of the pontoon bridges in Europe after D Day. I grew up listening to his accounts of his experiences from the war. Since he passed away in 2008, I find myself drawn to pictures and accounts of the war that probably bring me back in contact with my father in a certain way. This gallery is a great chronicle of a GI's view of the war and I was fascinated while viewing it. In 2008, my son and I took a trip to Germany and got to visit Buchenwald to get a taste of what terrors that camp held for the prisoners held and murdered there. I can't imagine your emotions when liberating the camp. My son and I were especially disturbed when seeing the three ring graves where thousands of prisoners were murdered and buried as the Allies approached. Thank you for your service and for this amazing chronicle of your war experience through Europe. Big, big, big Vote.

I was 4-years old when you brought back liberty to my country. My father taughted me to never forget America's and other allied country's sacrifices, among which many boys lost their youth during these horrific moments of terror. A very human approach to your gallery. There is no glorification of war at all. My father (Royal Air Force) and cousin (Welsh Guards) fought in North Africa and the Italian Campaign.

Hi Bob, This info surely helped me to really see the broad picture of Normandy at Omaha Beach; from D-Day. My Dad was in the 71st Inf. Division, 5th Inf. Regiment, I Company of the 3 rd Army under command of Old Blood and Guts. Sad to say, my Dad never received his CIB's, before his death in 2000. I have since received all, but his Purple Hearts. Also, he was in the liberation of Dachau prison camp. Again, thank you for your info.! Hope you are well! David Campbell Liberty, SC

Bob, I am looking for any infomation on my grandfathers 1st cousin. his name was walter j. fullbright. he was killed on dec.17, 1944 in the battle of the buldge. I see you have a photo of him. Dear Bob, I lost a cousin on D day in the 29th div. He was Francis Sydnor of Northumberland County Virginia. A cousin-in-law Leonard (Buster) Gaskins from the same county served in Patton's Third Army in an Artillery branch. He landed on day2 and crossed the Rhine. One more cousin from this waterman family, Thomas (Wally) Clarke served in Patton's 26th Div as a machine gun sergeant. He has written and published a book called "George S, Patton's Typical Soldier". He kept a dairy and the book has maps, photos and accounts. Patton's granddaughter, Helen Patton-Plusczyk helped him publish the memoir. It was beautifully done in 2009 by American Historical Publishing, Lancaster, Pa. I am ten years younger and served in the Naval Reserve during the Korean period. Thank you for your service and that of all the vets. Jack Freeze, Ocean Pines, Maryland

Bob, this site is awesome. I just had some students come to talk to my dad about his time in WWII. As you know so many of the men who served there are getting older and not going to be able to tell their stories much longer. This site will keep it around forever. We need to learn from this. I am looking for a Roy Reynolds from around St. Louis Missouri. He enlisted in the army in 1940 as a chaplain. He later had the rank of a colonel in the 408th infantry, 102 division of the US Army. He was pastor of our church from 1936 to 1940. If anyone has a picture of him I would love to have it. We are doing a history of our church.

Today Wed. June 18,2008 I fight tears for all you (and so many our our men) did for our country. I am 70 years old and my brother Raymond Louis Maves servered in the U.S.Army, built the Pontoon Bridges on the Rhein. I just lost my brother a few months ago. When I saw your photos I looked carefully to see if per chance he might be in one. He wasn't. Thank you for each photo posted and preserving our precious history. Betty from Winnetka California

Mr Searle, your photos have great historical value, may I ask that you send the originals please to The Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, Jerusalem, Israel, or to the Holocaust History Organisation based in Miami, USA. Another organisation who would appreciate copies is the National War Museum, London. You will be aware that certain racist groups deny the Holocaust ever happened, your soldiers snapshots are important in refuting this. Sir, I have a storey you will not believe. My father was a 82nd Airborne paratrooper. Will I have a picture with him and 2 other soliders. I found the picture after Mom pasted away and Dad had died 10 yrs earlier. He died in 1986 and she in 1995. Their are no names on the photo. You listed a bunch of phots and one of them is H. Tetu from FLA. But you have solved part of the mystery of the photo and I Thank you. Today is D-DAY 62 yrs ago Dad jumped out of that C-47 for 35 dollars a month. THANKS TO ALL THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN OF YOUR DAY

I have always stayed late and talked with them as long as they would have me ( which is usually long ). Oh, and something else Schellenberg: senseless bombings and rude military tactics were first demonstrated by the nazi's, okay? I can tell you some stories bud. what with the VI's and V2's? A shitload of Londoners died because of them. What about the bombings on various Dutch and Belgian cities? So what were the allies supposed to do? Apply the same sick tactics of course. If the Germans were planning to demoralize every country's population by firing away at the whole of their cities, it's only good tactics to do the same to the enemy, although we now know it doesn't make a bit of difference. By the way: they were not scared of the Russians taking over Europe, because by the time the States decided to get involved, the Germans were well on their way to get Russia in their hands. It was on request of Stalin that the Allies decided to open a front on the West in order to weaken the German army and stretch their lines thinner. Study your history more thoroughly before you talk nonsense. Lucky for us that people like Mr. Sears came to the rescue of every sensible human being on our continent. You won't find that kind of courage anymore today. We owe him and his fellow soldiers eternal respect and thankfulness, don't you forget that.

I really need to comment on Schellenberg way below here: If America fought for money and influence, then what the hell did your country fight for? They fought for Lebensraum (pretty egocentric) and er... yeah: influence! Now let's not forget that this was all the idea of a sick and crazy dictator, and that the majority of Germans were scared to death of Hitler's peacekeepers, just as in any modern totalitary country. Moreover, it doesn't matter why the Allies decided to do this, because it doesn't make one bit of difference for the soldier in the field. People often compare WWII with the war in Iraq. Well, the war in Iraq started with a lie from in the White House, but all in all it's good the dictator was removed. The invasion of Europe started with the right reasons: to rid Europe from Nazi Germany. And it may be so that the States only got involved after the attack on Pearl Harbor, but nevertheless they did it! And the brave man who is so kind to share his images here, was part of that, along with hundreds of thousands other Americans, British, Canadians, free French, Polish Australians and so on. For me, that automatically makes them heroes, no matter what your doubtful source of information has told you. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart! A grateful Belgian of 34 years of age.

Thank you for sharing these photos. Though I am young (33), my parents, particularly my mom, have many memories from this time though they were very young (both will be 67 this year). I think both of them will find interest in seeing these photos. A favorite uncle of my mom's was shot down somewhere over Germany in a, I believe, B-29. He servived though and is living in GA. Anyhow, my parents often made me watch documentaries on WWII and it was a favorite part of history for me to study. Band of Brothers is what your gallery reminds me of.

I wrote a book about a Chaplain who served during WWII, landing on Omaha Beach June 6, 1944. I'm wondering if you can recall any of the Chaplains of your tour and/or if you might have anything to share about them.

Dear Sir, Today on the eve of the 60th anniversary of D Day I looked at your site. Being British (Welsh) I was drawn to the pictures of the GI's in England. Your letter to your brother states "what a way to see England from the back of a GI truck. I hope you were treated well by the natives. My thanks to you and all those young men who just simply gave of their very best got on with the job and helped secure a future for us. My father and two of his brothers served with the Canadian armed forces. My uncle Birger had schapnel blow out the front of the head but survived to return and have a family. My uncle Alf was with the navy. My father Roy, was with the engineers and all three brothers survived. Thank you for your personal sacrifice and ongoing example in daily life.

My father was in many of the places pictured in this gallery, such as Normandy (he stormed the beach at Easy Red), Vire in France, Luxembourg, Eupen in Belgium (he spent 131 days there in the winter of '44-'45), Kassel and Grafenwohr in Germany, and Pilsen in Czechoslovakia. I have his itinerary and nearly 250 pictures that he took while "over there." He was in the 205th CIC Detachment of V Corps.

This brings back memories. I joined the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (attached to the 82nd Airborne) just in time to make the 'Bulge'. We ended up about 20 miles north of Bastogne above the town of Vielsalm . As the newest 2nd Lt. in the company, I was given the job of covering the withdrawal on Xmas eve. Capt--- said; "don't worry, you will sit here till midnight and a messenger will come around to guide you out". The Krauts didn't observe the schedule and hit us a couple of hours before midnight. After a lot of shooting, I was able to get half of the platoon back to join the regiment.

Sir, I found your website by surfing around in the topic as I am in the middle of a unit on WWII with my 6th graders. Your website is fabulous. I must also thank you for your duty to your country and that you have secured my freedom. I went to Normandy in the Summer of 1997 and it was almost like a religious experience, a pilgrimage for me. When we got to The American Cemetary at Colleville, I cannot explain the feeling of profound humility and gratitude I felt overlooking Omaha beach--with row upon row of American soldiers' graves behind me. If it was in my power, I would take a field trip with my students to Normandy every year to show them the price of freedom,and to pay our respects to those citizen soldiers. Again, thank you for preserving the historical record for all of us--and for your service to the United States of America and the world. I am one teacher who will teach her students their history. My Grandfather was at Normandy - he talked about only a very little. He was wounded and was carried by pack mule to an aid station. I am very lucky to have video of him talking about some of his time there. He died while holding my hand January 26th, 2003 - he was 93. Going through my Grandmother's photos there are pictures like yours. It makes you stop and get on bended knee - thanking the Lord first for brave men like my Grandfather and you - and thanking you for the service you both have given. God Bless

First one was just a test... Iam 29 years old. My father was in the WWII to. He told me all the hardness of this war with realistic descriptions. this week he'll become 81. All he tried couldnt bring him back the best years of his life. His journey brought him through hole europe. But he was never there in peace. I hope he will be in condition for a trip to brest next sommer. he said it was the peacefullest time for him. theire armee was there for a regroup some weeks. He had much luck coming back. he saw hundrets of his friends dieing and was one of view from this battalion that came back from the front. everytime i will remember what he was learning from that and his rememberings will be mine. i wished he wrote a diary so that other people could be remind. i thank you for doing this. its still enough war in the world. i hope it will never be increased to that ! creatings from chemnitz, germany (mabye you know were it is located) H. I am a contemporary of the Vietnam War. It was my war, although I didn’t serve. My father’s wars were WWII and Korea, as a member of he Army Air Force. He didn’t talk much about his war-time experiences except to tell briefly of how he suffered frostbite in Korea and how they used seashells as shrapnel in warheads. He went on to serve his country in peace-time working for the Defense Intelligence Agency in the MIA/POW division. I am proud of his active duty and of his civilian duty working to get our men home from the Vietnam War. He’s gone now and so I can’t ask more questions. He wasn’t at Normandy. He wasn’t at Remagen. (But I do know a Steve Gray from VA who was at Remagen – did you know of him?) You photos tell quite a story, a moving story. Thank you for taking the effort and time to share your memories with us. Thank you so much for the service you provided to Our Country, Your Country, My Country, our humanity world-wide! Elaine

My father served in Army Air Force and was part of the Italian campaign (Naples) and my uncle served with Patton (was captured and held as a POW). Dear Mr. Searl. I, like many of the people who view this gallery was overcome with emotion. Being Jewish and living very proudly in Israel, I can only salute soldiers like yourself who fought in W.W.II and brought about the defeat of Nazism and freed the world from the grip of evil and enabled the Jewish nation to recover after the holocaust. My father fought in the British army for six years as an instructor sergeant in REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers). I was born in England in 1948 and moved to Israel in 1967. I served in the Israel Defense Forces in the Artillery and Intelligence Corps (First Sergeant) and spent many months over the years doing reserve military duty. Nothing but nothing can compare to what you heroes of W.W.II went through and the whole free world will be forever in your debt. Sir, I wish to thank you for sharing your photos with all of us. I am presently a colonel on active duty with the United States Marine Corps and am just completing 30 years of active service. I am an infantry officer, and yet my experiences pale in comparison to that which you and your generation witnessed. My father, TEC5 Thomas C. Hernandez, served with Company A, 56th Signal Battalion as part of V Corps. Although he passed away a few years ago, my mother still has numerous pictures and momentos from his experiences. One of these is a Czechoslovakian newspaper with a front page photo of the square in Pilzen on VE Day with GI's dancing with Czech ladies. My father was one of those GI's. I recently completed a 3-year tour in Stuttgart, Germany and had the opportunity to visit many of the locations where he and his unit served. Your gallery is superb. my grandfather landed on the coast of normandy 2 weeks after d-day. he walked from there to czechoslavakia. when germany had lost he was on a boat to the pacific when they dropped the bomb he was turned around and sent home. I cherish the moments my grandfather speaks to me about his history. Watching "Saving private Ryan" with him and hearing him tell me what it was like to press himself into the ground, hearing bullets zipping past his head, will always be a highlight of my life. I am 28 and lived in Aachen, Germany as a visiting American graduate student from ages 21-23. I visited many of the locations you were in during WWII: Eupen, Bastogne, St. Vith... I tried to imagine then what it would have been like had I been there not out of free will as a visiting student, but rather serving my country as you did. During those two years of living abroad, I gained immense respect and admiration for you and your buddies who selflessly fought for our freedom and the freedom of Europe. I viewed your pictures and was overcome with emotion. With tears in my eyes I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation from the bottom of my heart for the bravery, courage, and dedication that you and your fellow soldiers exhibited in helping to liberate Europe, and to always remember the brave soldiers who did not make it back. The pictures of Buchenwald were very difficult for me. I was born in Czechoslavakia, 2 years after WWII ended. Since I am Jewish, nearly all of my relatives were brutally murdered in the camps. Dead human beings stacked up like discarded wood. It is a lesson to mankind on how racism can infect a society, resulting in camps like Buchenwald and Auschwicz.

Was this on the Wirral near Birkenhead. I live near Upton and I remember as a child there being a Camp there. A friend recently deceased was held in Buchenwald. He had been a member of the Free Dutch Army and was caged there after being captured when all around him had been killed. On his behalf I thank you as well. Hope this finds you well. In one of your other galleries, you had some info on the 56th Signal Corp. My father was a member of that corp, His name was Irving Levine.....wonder if perhaps he was with you.

Steve Sanders, Thanks for your kind comments on my Memory Album of WWII. I sure remember your Grandfather in so many ways during the years we spent together. Most of all I can remember the "Chaw" that he always seem to have. I often wondered where he was able to get it... I have just uncovered a photo of him taken with others a few days before the landings. It was Detachment "B" of the 56th Signal Battalion, he was in a group of about 15 troops... It was taken probably in Dewlish, England about the last week in May 1944. I believe he drove Jeep for a Lt. Dean Chase during the early days of the landings. In the next few days I will try to post this photo on this website. It will appear in "Gallery #6" of the Pbase site. I am proud to say that I am a grandson of Willard Sanders who served in this group during that period. Unfortunately, his pictures were lost in a flood which took his home in the 1980's. Your galleries have given me a brief glimpse into what he and your group experienced during that historic time. I also want to say a thanks to each of your group, both those who returned and those who did not, for thier sacrifices. Joanne, Your very kind and thoughtful words are sincerely appreciated. The times spent in the British Isles before the Normandy landings were pleasant ones and I have many fine memories of the times I spent in the Bristol area, East Anglia, Scotland and of course, London. In 1942 I was able to witness, at first hand, a small part of the damaging air raids and loss of life that your people endured. They have my respect and admiration. I was fortunate enough a few years ago, to return to visit a few of the areas in your country, that I knew so well in 1942-1944. Again my thanks for your note.

I am from England and I have had a morbid interest in WWII for many years. I beleive that we should never forget what happened lest it happens again... God forbid. If it was not for brave men and women like yourself we may not be living in such a free world as this. (I know it has it's problems but I beleive it to be a lot better than it could have been.) I am 42 so missed the war. I class myself as one of the lucky ones. My Grandfather was in the 1st world war and I have listened to many terrible stories with horror. (Although this war was more of a gentlemans war, it still had it's horror's.) I would like to thank you and all the men and women that put there own lives on the line so that people like me could live a free and decent life. I thank you. Best wishes Joanne England

Dear Bob, My Grandfather, John Caterlin, was also in WWII, he was a Combat Engineer, serving in the 1st Army, 7th Armor Division. He also passed through St. Vith. As I recall it, his unit left a sign behind stating, "You are now entering St. Vith the easy way, courtesy of the 7th Armor Division". Just wondering if you recall the sign? Your pictures illustrate that normal men from everyday America fought and won this horrific war. I would like to thank you for your service to our country during WWII. It is the sacrifices made by your generation that has afforded us the opportunities of today. Thank you for posting your images as I plan to share them with my family this July 4th.

Hello Bob.....I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your efforts to keep our nation free. And I thank you for making your wonderful photo galleries public. We must never forget! As a young girl during the war, living in Rantoul, IL. (near Chanute Air Base), I was in the Junior Red Cross, making bandages, etc. for our military overseas. I thought of that as I looked at your photographs; thought how you were at that same time over there fighting, seeing and experiencing things beyond the imagination of any normal person. Again.... Thanks to you, your compatriots in the photos, and all those who fought so our nation would never suffer as we see the suffering and destruction in these photos. Shirley Emerson

I just happend to stumble on to this great site for photographers in search of some insparation. To my surprise I saw your work, and it has left me in dismay if I may say so. I went to bed and had to get back up just to say thank you for all you done for the human race in protecting democracy and freedom which still to this date people are trying to take from us (9-11). Hi Bob! I really enjoyed your WWII pics of your "adventure" across the ETO. I was a paratrooper in the 101st, but 30 years after your time in the Army. The pictures that I took during my time in, will be cherished forever. Good memories. By the looks of some the concentration camp shots, you saw more than a normal human should EVER see.
