This temple was built by Queen Hatshepsut, the first female ruler of Egypt. She won over the priesthood to become king by assuming the dress and manner of a man and by claiming divine birth. After her death, her successor tried to obliterate her name from history by defacing all her cartouches and images.
The temple is set dramatically against a cliff in a series of terraces . Considering that it was built 3,500 years ago, it looks new and modern and was only discovered in 1890s. In 1997, a massacre happened right here killing 58 tourists.... and since then not a single tourist was killed in the whole country.
