The skimmers are probably the most familiar of all dragonflies. Most species are habitat generalists, occurring throughout summer at ponds, marshes, and other bodies of standing water. They range in size from small to large and many have color markings on their wings. Most species are fairly common. This family is the largest in Wisconsin (and North America) and some of its major subgroups are the King Skimmers (Genus Libellula), Meadowhawks (Sympetrum), and Whitefaces (Leucorrhinia). I found 22+ species in 2008.
