Chalk-fronted Corporal (Libellula julia)

One of the five common "King Skimmers" in Wisconsin. Smallish at ~1.6" but widespread and often abundant at slow waters throughout Wisconsin, especially in June. All ages and sexes show a pair of broad, pale shoulder bars on top of the thorax, resembling "corporal stripes" to some. Males have extensive white ("chalk") on front of the thorax and at the base of a dark-tipped abdomen. Females are similar to males but duller and juveniles are dull orange-brown. All show clear wings with very small dark bases. Other similar species either show dark/light wing patches or are significantly smaller.
