The Wind River Range

The last portion of our trip was a five day backpacking trip in The Wind River Range, located south of the Grand Tetons in western Wyoming. The range runs for approximately 100 miles and contains the highest peak in Wyoming; Gannett Peak.

We started our trip from Elkhart Park, a trail head fourteen miles from Pinedale. On our first day we hiked about twelve miles to Island Lake. Our second and third nights were spent in Titcomb Basin (three miles from Island Lake). While in the basin we also visited Indian Basin and Steve climbed Fremont Peak. Our last night was again at Island Lake and we hiked out the last day.

We had seen the pictures and read the trip reports - we knew it was going to be beautiful. But we still weren't prepared for just how gorgeous it was. We were awed! I hope our pictures can convey just a fraction of the wild and dramatic beauty we experienced. It truly is a special corner of the world and we hope this was just the first of many visits!
