Gallery Seventy Six: Spring comes to Yellowstone – a travel photo-essay

As already demonstrated in both Galleries Eleven and Seventy Five, a travel photo-essay is a group of photographic impressions that work cumulatively, as opposed to a series of “stand-alone” images. Travel photo-essays are interpretive rather than descriptive or narrative in form – the accompanying words offer context, but images capable of carrying an essay are intended to communicate meaning in their own way. Each image adds its message to the whole. In this, my third gallery devoted to a travel photo-essay, I offer 22 images made over a four-day period in the late spring of 2010 in Yellowstone, America’s first and premier national park. It was my third photographic shoot in Yellowstone, my first ever in the spring. What makes spring so different in Yellowstone? It is all about new life itself – snow melts, the waters flow more heavily, the landscape turns to green, and the birthing season comes to the great herds of wildlife. These impressions tell this story. I have sequenced the photographs so that each impression takes from what has gone before and projects meaning into those that follow.

I present this gallery, as usual, in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
