Crossing the Madison, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 2010

This is the first in a sequence of four animal portraits that cumulatively speak of the coming of spring to Yellowstone. Here, an elk fords the Madison River. Snow still lines its banks, yet the melt off is in full swing, and the Madison is at full flow.

The elk must navigate the river regardless of the season if it is to survive. At least in spring, the food must be easier for them to find. Thanks for noting the constancy of life here, Iris.

To every season, change.....change. Winter is turning into spring and the Madison is at its spring depth. The constant is the elk who navigates the river regardless of season.
