For over two months, pro-democracy student protesters have occupied this section of a major roadway in Central Hong Kong to demand free and open elections for the next chief executive. Their action was triggered by the Chinese Communists insisting on pre-screening all candidates to guarantee the continuation of the puppet government.
We visited this site twice, both time at midday. It was eerily quiet, unlike the usual hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. The air was clean with no vehicle traffic. Most of the occupiers were either sleeping in their tents or away to school/work. A few were doing housekeeping tasks needed to keep the site operating as a mini-city. There were more visitors like us admiring their handiwork.
On December 11, the authority started clearing this protest site. Nevertheless, this monumental event will be forever etched into the collective memory of Hong Kongers. The struggle against tyranny will continue.
