The fishing village of Tai O is about as far away from the urban core of Hong Kong and still within the territory. Located on the western end of Lantau Island (大嶼山), it is a 50 minutes bus ride from the town of Tung Chung, just south of the HK International Airport. It is a favorite day-trip destination for urban dwellers. Built above tidal flats, the traditional stilt houses (棚屋) are the most famous sights of Tai O.
Although local residents supplement fishing with sea food processing, most are in the tourist trades.
