Prior to 1970, Sha Tin was a rural stop on the Kowloon-Canton Railroad. Urban dwellers came here to visit the nearby temples and monasteries as a one-day getaway.
In 1973, the Hong Kong government carried out its plan to develop Sha Tin into one of the new towns in order to ease the population pressure in the urban areas. Now, the Sha Tin district houses over 600,000 residents.
