Catherine’s Palace

Located in the town of Pushkin 24 km south of St. Peterburg, this summer palace of the Czars was initiated in 1717 by Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great. This rococo style palace was constructed during the reign of their daughter Empress Elizabeth. It was expanded by British architect Charles Cameron during the reigh of Catherine II (the Great). Its most famous exhibit is the Amber Room, which started as a gift from Prussia to Peter the Great in 1716. In Oct 1941, the Nazi disassembled the room and shipped it back to Königsberg, which the German Army abandoned in Jan 1945. The amber were never found. They were probably destroyed by earlier air raids. The current Amber Room was a replica reconstructed in 1979. Photography inside is prohibited.
