More bad weather (April 25 - 29)

We need a rest day and spend it with driving further north. We visit the popular rock climbing area of Smith Rocks State Park and the John Day Painted Hills National Monument. We explore several waterfalls dropping into the Columbia River Gorge. In a desperate attempt to see if Mt Saint Helens might be possible to ski we drive to the trailhead but find only rain and snow slush. On the positive, we also find a beautiful bright-green rainforest. We explore Seattle and make a new friend that is eager to join us on our trip. We visit the Space Needle and start a tour around the Olympic Peninsula visiting rain forest and beach spots. When we reach Portland again we finally find good restaurants to have raw Oysters. Unfortunately, we also have to change into a new rental car as our trusted gas guzzler wants to continue no further. After a big repacking action we continue south towards the Northern California coast and the Redwood Forests. Over drinks in Eureka we have our own eureka moment and decide to go back to the Sierra to find higher elevation snow as there at least the weather is reported as good and stable. Wir brauchen einen Ruhetag und verbringen ihn damit, weiter nach Norden zu fahren. Wir besuchen das beliebte Klettergebiet in Smith Rocks State Park und das John Day Painted Hills National Monument. Wir erkunden mehrere Wasserfälle, in der Columbia River Gorge. In einem verzweifelten Versuch zu sehen ob Mt. Saint Helens eine Skitour sein kann fahren wir zum Trailhead, finden aber nur Regen und Schneematsch. Positiv ist, dass wir auch einen wunderschönen leuchtend grünen Regenwald finden. Wir erkunden Seattle und finden einen neuen Freund, der uns gerne auf unserer Reise begleiten möchte. Wir besuchen die Space Needle und beginnen eine Tour rund um die Olympic-Peninsula mit Regenwäldern und Stränden. Als wir Portland wieder erreichen, finden wir endlich gute Restaurants, in denen man rohe Austern essen kann. Leider müssen auch wir auf einen neuen Mietwagen umsteigen, da unser treuer Spritfresser nicht weitermachen will. Nach einer großen Umpackaktion geht es weiter nach Süden an die nordkalifornische Küste und zu den Redwood Forests. Bei einem Drink in Eureka erleben wir unseren eigenen Heureka-Moment und beschließen, in die Sierra zurückzukehren, um höher gelegenen Schnee zu finden, da dort zumindest das Wetter als gut und stabil ist.
