Back in the Sierra (May 1 to 4)

We carry our ski gear on a dry hiking trail up the Horse Creek drainage and set up camp just below the first continuous snow slope at 8250ft. While the sky is clear, it is very windy and we hear the wind gusts roar through the valley all night like freight trains. The next day is still very windy and a summit seems off limit. We find very good skiing though when we ascend to a high bowl between Matterhorn Peak and Twin Peaks. We enjoy a nice wind protected spot at 10,400ft before we ski back to camp. After the winds calm down we ascend towards Matterhorn Peak (12,279ft). Once we reach the steep couloirs below the rocky summit pyramid, only Günther continues and he climbs to the summit alone. On our drive back south we have some good food and drinks and we visit the obscure Trona Pinnacles. Then it is time for BBQ, beers, and hot tub again in Thousand Oaks Wir tragen unsere Skiausrüstung auf einem schneefreien Wanderweg den Horse Creek-Trail hinauf und schlagen unser Lager direkt unterhalb des ersten durchgehenden Schneehangs auf 2515 m auf. Während der Himmel klar ist, ist es sehr windig und wir hören die ganze Nacht über die Windböen wie Güterzüge durch das Tal donnern. Der nächste Tag ist immer noch sehr windig und ein Gipfel scheint unmöglich. Wir finden aber sehr gutes Skifahren wenn wir in ein hohes Kar zwischen Matterhorn Peak und Twin Peaks aufsteigen. Wir genießen einen schönen, windgeschützten Platz auf 3.170 m bevor wir mit den Skiern zurück zum Lager fahren. Nachdem sich der Wind beruhigt hat, steigen wir am nächsten Tag Richtung Matterhorn Peak (3743 m) auf. Als wir die steilen Rinnen unterhalb der felsigen Gipfelpyramide erreichen, geht nur noch Günther weiter und klettert alleine zum Gipfel. Auf unserer Fahrt zurück nach Süden genießen wir gutes Essen und Trinks und besuchen die wenig beachteten Trona Pinnacles. Dann ist es wieder Zeit für BBQ, Bier und Whirlpool in Thousand Oaks.
