Central Oregon (April 22 - 24)

The weather is clearing up in southern and central Oregon and we continue north to Bend. We drive to the Mt Bachelor ski area to see if the road beyond the resort is cleared to allow access to South Sister. It is not. We make the short ascent on Tumalo Mountain across the street from the ski resort. The climb is beautiful through a forest of ice crusted trees. From the summit (7775ft) we ski down the east side bowl in very nice snow for about 300ft in elevation before returning to the summit and descending back to the car on the west side in deep and heavy snow. We spend the afternoon hiking in the nearby Newbury National Volcanic Monument. The weather forecast for the next few days is good so we decide to hike in to ski South Sister. This is a long approach on a snow covered highway and is usually done by snow mobile. We hike in for about 6.5 miles flat and downhill before the mountain starts. Then we ascend for a few more miles to set up camp on an open flat area at about 6760ft. Next morning we continue, first more flat approach, then with increasing slope until we reach the volcanic rim and the summit (10,358ft). This is the only time we would get a glimpse of the large volcano of Mt Hood further north, but we don't know that at the time. After the first section of frozen and wind formed snow, the skiing is very good back to camp. After a brief rest and packing up our heavy gear, we continue the ski descent back to the road, which is strenuous as we are sinking in soft and heavy deep snow with every turn while navigating the dense forest. The hike back along the long uphill highway is pure misery while we are repeatedly passed by snow mobiles. I have a complete collapse of energy before realizing that I have not eaten anything all day. Sepp and Guenther help me and make sure we all get back to the car safely.

Das Wetter klart auf und wir fahren weiter nach Norden nach Bend. Wir fahren zum Skigebiet Mt. Bachelor, um zu sehen, ob die Straße hinter dem Resort geräumt ist, was den Zugang zu South Sister ermöglichen würde. Nichts ist geräumt. Wir machen den kurzen Aufstieg auf Tumalo Mountain gegenüber dem Skigebiet. Der Aufstieg durch einen Wald aus eisverkrusteten Bäumen ist wunderschön. Vom Gipfel (2370 m) fahren wir bei sehr schönem Schnee zuerst die Ostseite hinunter, bevor wir zum Gipfel zurückkehren und bei tiefem und starkem Schnee zum Auto auf der Westseite abfahren. Den Nachmittag verbringen wir mit einer Wanderung im nahegelegenen Newbury National Volcanic Monument. Die Wettervorhersage für die nächsten Tage ist gut, daher beschließen wir, South Sister anzugehen. Dies ist ein langer Zustieg auf einer schneebedeckten Straße die normalerweise mit einem Schneemobil verkürzt wird. Wir wandern über 10 km flach und bergab, bevor der Berg beginnt. Dann steigen wir noch ein paar km auf, um unser Zelt auf einem offenen Plateau auf etwa 2060 m aufzuschlagen. Am nächsten Morgen geht es weiter, zunächst flach, dann mit zunehmender Steigung, bis wir den Vulkanrand und den Gipfel (3.157 m) erreichen. Dies ist das einzige Mal, dass wir einen Blick auf Mt. Hood weiter nördlich haben, aber das wissen wir zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht. Nach einem Anfang über gefrorenem und vom Wind geformtem Schnee ist die Abfahrt zurück zum Camp sehr gut. Nach einer kurzen Pause und dem Einpacken unserer ganzen Ausrüstung setzen wir die Skiabfahrt zurück zur Straße fort, was anstrengend ist, da jeder Bogen im weichen und schweren Schnee versinkt, während wir durch dichten Wald navigieren. Der Rückweg entlang der langen, bergauf führenden Straße ist sehr mühsam, während wir immer wieder von Schneemobilen überholt werden. Ich erleide einen völligen Energiezusammenbruch, bevor mir klar wird, dass ich den ganzen Tag nichts gegessen habe. Sepp und Günther helfen mir und sorgen dafür, dass wir alle sicher zum Auto zurückkommen.
