Bad weather (April 19 - 21)

Now the bad weather has really found us. We passed Mt Shasta without ever seeing it and take cheap quarters in Klamath Falls in southern Oregon. We decide that we can do a few short tours near Klamath Falls and spend an afternoon exploring some amazing lava tubes at Lava Beds National Monument. Mt Garfield (8054ft) near Crater Lake is a wet event with heavy snowfall and poor visibility. We only know from the GPS that we are on the summit and never see Crater Lake while standing on the crater rim. Mt Bailey (8363ft) starts with a sunny but long and flat approach and ends in an icy rocky ridge-line where we turn around at 8200ft and skip the summit. Jetzt hat uns das schlechte Wetter wirklich erwischt. Wir fuhren an Mt. Shasta vorbei, ohne ihn jemals zu sehen, und übernachteten billig in Klamath Falls im Süden Oregons. Wir beschließen, ein paar kurze Touren in der Nähe der Klamath Falls zu unternehmen und verbringen einen Nachmittag damit die erstaunliche Lavaröhren am Lava Beds National Monument zu erkunden. Mt. Garfield (2455 m) in der Nähe von Crater Lake ist ein nasses Unternehmen mit starkem Schneefall und schlechter Sicht. Wir wissen nur vom GPS, dass wir uns auf dem Gipfel befinden und können Crater Lake nie sehen obwohl wir auf dem Kraterrand stehen. Mt. Bailey (2549 m) beginnt mit einem sonnigen, aber langen und flachen Zustieg und endet in einem eisigen, felsigen Gipfelgrat, wo wir bei 2500 m umkehren und den Gipfel auslassen.
