Searching for snow (April 16 - 18)

Sepp and Günther arrive in Thousand Oaks on April 15 and recuperate from the travel with a few beer around the pool and hot tub. The next morning we pack the car and start our drive north in search of snow. The endless road through the Southern California desert does not look like winter at all. It is so windy that we encounter toppled big-rigs due to the strong gusts. Two side trips as high as 7800ft into the mountains do not appear to bring us any closer to snow. We keep going for a total of about 350mi without finding much snow. We continue our quest north and suddenly spot a mountain near the road with a good-looking snowy gully and we jump into action. Mt Emma (10,525ft) has a nice and continuous East facing snow chute that gives us good skiing to interrupt the boredom of endless driving. Afterwards we hurry further north as the forecast promises an incoming storm and we want to get to Lassen Peak before it is too late. The next morning start the long march to Lassen Peak from the National Park Visitor center for miles on the uncleared roads. High on the mountain it is extremely windy with the soon approaching storm. We barely are able to switchback up the long and - under different conditions - probably excellent SE face. We skip the summit to avoid being blown off the mountain and turn around about 100ft below the high point (10,457ft) Overall this tour was very strenuous with about 5000ft elevation difference and more than 11miles horizontal distance under poor snow conditions. Sepp und Günther kommen am 15. April in Thousand Oaks an und erholen sich von der Reise bei ein paar Bieren am Pool und im Whirlpool. Am nächsten Morgen packen wir das Auto und machen uns auf die Suche nach Schnee Richtung Norden. Die endlose Straße durch die Wüste Südkaliforniens sieht überhaupt nicht nach Winter aus. Es ist so windig, dass wir aufgrund der starken Böen auf umgestürzte Big-Rigs stoßen. Zwei Abstecher in bis zu 2400 m Höhe in die Berge scheinen uns dem Schnee nicht näher zu bringen. Wir fahren insgesamt etwa 560 km weiter, ohne viel Schnee vorzufinden. Wir setzen unsere Suche nach Norden fort und entdecken plötzlich einen Berg in der Nähe der Straße mit einer guten schneebedeckten Rinne und werfen uns in Aktion. Mt. Emma (3.208 m) hat eine schöne und durchgehende, nach Osten ausgerichtete Rinne, die uns gutes Skifahren ermöglicht, um die Langeweile des endlosen Fahrens zu unterbrechen. Anschließend eilen wir weiter nach Norden, da die Wettervorhersage einen aufkommenden Sturm verspricht und wir Lassen Peak erreichen wollen, bevor es zu spät ist. Am nächsten Morgen beginnt der lange Marsch vom Nationalpark-Besucherzentrum zu Lassen Peak über Kilometer auf nicht geräumten Straßen. Hoch am Berg ist es extrem windig und durch den kommenden Sturm. Wegen dem starken Wind sind wir kaum in der Lage die lange und – unter anderen Bedingungen – wahrscheinlich hervorragende SO-Flanke aufzusteigen. Wir lassen den Gipfel aus um nicht vom Berg geblasen zu werden, und drehen weniger als 50m unterhalb des höchsten Punktes (3.187m) um. Insgesamt war diese Tour etwa 1.500 m Höhenunterschied und mehr als 18 km horizontaler Distanz mit sehr anstrengenden schlechten Schneebedingungen.
