Vermilion Parish (County) describes itself as "The most Cajun Place on Earth" and it is rightly so.
Largely a rural agricultural area, Cajun French is spoken here more than English. (But you can hold a conversation in English too)

Vermilion Parish is one of the largest parishes in Louisiana, sitting along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, but don't look for any sandy beaches here, marshes dominate the coastline. The Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge owned by the Louisiana Dept Wildlife and Fisheries along the coast provides habitat for migratory waterfowl. Areas adjacent provide excellent hunting and fishing opportunities.

When you think of Vermilion Parish, you think of rice, sugar cane, oil production, and hunting. A new industry is taking shape, tourism. The unique Cajun experience the parish provides is attracting people to come and see.

Vermilion Parish was settled first by Native American Attapakas. In the 1800's the Acadian people that were expelled from Nova Scotia arrived. Many of these people settled in the adjacent parishes, but the migration continued westward into Vermilion.
