Farther down the Vermilion River in Vermilion Parish is an area known as "Big Woods". That is exactly what it is. Guessing, when the area was first settled, the wooded area was too thick to economicaly clear and penetrate for crops and cattle.

It is an area that drowns most radio and cell phone communications, the woods are so thick.

Seen here is a small clearing, showing the ancient oaks that thrive here.
