A self-portrait can be an expressive way of presenting yourself to the world. Not only your physical self: a self-portrait can make a statement beyond mere appearances, and provide the viewer with insights about you, your photographic style, your artistic tastes and your state of mind. A self-portrait can be a tool for studying, confronting and coming to terms with yourself, as well.
Do it indoors or do it outdoors. Head, head & shoulders, half- or full-body. Do a cleverly planned photograph or grab an opportunity that just presented itself: your reflection in a mirror, in a shop-window, in a pond or in a polished auto-part. Shoot yourself at arm's-length, or mount your camera on a tripod and use its shutter delay feature. Experiment with lighting, costumes, backdrops and post-processing. Your features can be very clear or only hinted at - as long as you feel you have captured your "essence".
