I can't recall exactly how light the background was, but I'd anticipated seeing a darker background than this. While you could still do that, this is also good as it is. The good thing about darkening is that you compress the gradient, so there's no problem with bit depth. If you were expanding the gradient for increased contrast, there would be a point where the gradient would no longer be smooth and you would see evidence of posterising where bands or patches of even colour without detail would start to appear. The bottom line is that you can safely darken the background a lot more if you really want to, but it's a matter of personal preference for your image.
Anyway, a good image just got better.

Outstanding. Graphically simple lines that draw the eye up and down the spiraling column. No extraneous noise. Well done.

Interesting image. I agree that a darker background would give some more pop. But, what I really like is the way the large section of the 'tube?' look like a finger (see the nail) which has just painted/traced the upper swirl.

Nice perspective and framing for an interesting subject. I would never have guessed a plasma lamp. It looks more like a hook. As Ser suggested, darkening the background would help your subject to stand out. Just use the magic wand to select the light brown background and then either adjust the levels or curves or colorise until you are happy with it. It's a very simple task in any processing application. Good work anyway. John
